Pestemals were primarily used as hammam towel in Anatolia. Sultans of the Ottoman dynasty wore pestemals in the hammam. The Pestemal is a time honored handicraft. Throughout history Turkish towels were produced by weaving on hand looms by women in Turkey's eastern Black Sea and Aegean regions. These towels are not factory-made rather all of the pestemals are produced by traditional methods in a respectful manner to its origin, woven on hand looms and vegetable dye is used.
